How do I charge when i'm sharing an EV?
First time in an EV? Wondering how to go about charging once you're out on the road? Here's what you need to know...
How do I find and use public chargers?
During your car sharing session, you might have to charge the EV as it needs to be returned with around 80% charge.
The easiest way to find a public charger is to download the Zap-Map app. The app will tell you where the chargers are located, if they are available, how to use them and the price per kWh.
Please be aware that some charging stations require a subscription or a key card to access them. Therefore, we recommend planning your journey ahead so you can to charge hassle free with contactless pay as you go payment.
Guide to public charging:
1. See if the EV has a type 2 charging cable:
When you book the EV, it will state if the EV comes with a type 2 charging cable. You use the charging cable for public charger that are below 50kW. If the EV does not come with a charging cable, don’t worry, you can still use rapid chargers (50kW and above) as they already have a cable attached.
2. Plan your journey:
Download Zap-Map, find chargers near you, and plan your journey if you need to charge at a new destination. Important - avoid having less than 20% battery charge where possible so that you don't need to stress if there is not a charger nearby.
3. Contactless card payment chargers:
Look for a charger that accepts contactless card payment.
Our partner Osprey offers contactless payment on all their charging
stations and their chargers are rapid units (50kW and above), so you will spend
less time charging and more time enjoying your EV
BP Pulse also offers contactless payment on their chargers that are 50kW
and above.
On Zap-Map you can apply a payment filter, so it only shows you the chargers that accept contactless card payment.
4. Plan for returning the EV:
Once your car sharing session is coming to an end, the EV should be returned with 80% charge, so please be aware that you might have to set some time aside to charge before returning it – head over to this page to see how long it will take to charge and the cost.
