The importance of Servicing your Electric Vehicle!
One of the advantages of an EV is that they have substantially fewer parts and mechanisms. However, whilst this means they require less frequent maintenance, it doesn’t mean that they don’t need to be properly serviced at all.
Like all vehicles, EVs require regular checks to ensure that they remain safe and convenient. Even with fewer moving parts, trained technicians still need to ensure that they’re safe to be on the road network.

What are the common parts that need to be serviced?
Batteries
Their batteries, for instance, can malfunction without proper maintenance. While batteries tend to have 5-8 year warranties by their manufactures, there are circumstances that can significantly reduce their lifespan. If exposed to extreme weather or constantly charged using high voltage, the battery can begin to deteriorate.[i] In addition, batteries add a significant amount of weight to a vehicle, which can have an adverse effect on both tyres and brakes – presenting the need for more frequent checks.
Tyres
EVs require specific tyres that can withstand the extra weight and torque of an electric car. Whilst they are more durable than regular tyres, they will need to be checked for wear, cuts, and misalignment[ii]. Therefore, while it is less fiddly to service an EV, it’s no less important to make sure they’re as safe as possible.

You can easily service your EV at a garage approved by the manufacturer, and plan around your convenience. However, as an EV owner you will not be able to take advantage of any garage that you come across in the event of an emergency. As you’re dealing with enormous quantities of electricity and a different car anatomy, traditional auto mechanics may not be qualified to work on EVs, and they could violate the car’s warranty. They’re also unlikely to have the appropriate equipment or required parts. Therefore, it’s better to be proactive; servicing your EV at a convenient time rather than waiting until you really need support, which can be difficult to find at the last minute.
How often should my EV be serviced?
Different manufacturers have different recommendations, so it is always good to check your EV’s manual to see what is recommended for your car. A good rule of thumb would be to have it serviced yearly to make sure everything is running well.

How much does servicing typically cost?
Monthly quotes depend on a variety of factors, such as car make, model, and milage. Here is an example:
KIA e-NIRO (64.8kWh) with 8,000miles/annum*:
£26.05 +VAT/ month
However, with the Zoom EV bundle 20% discount, the same car would be:
£20.84 +VAT/month.
